kclarkIt's hard to believe once I was considered the "new teacher" at Rancho; now I'm practically a veteran! I joined the staff in 1996, the year California adopted class-size reduction. I taught first grade for several years, loving every minute! In fact that first group I had at Rancho started college this fall!!! I spent the 2002-03 school year teaching abroad in England on a Fulbright (look for my book someday!) Three years ago, I wanted yet another change and moved to third grade, and love every minute of that! I live locally with my husband, Randall, and three children: Ross, a 17-year-old high school senior, Maddie aged 14 and a freshman, and baby Shelby, born in February 2007. In my leisure time I enjoy picnics, watching Giants baseball and USC football, rooting for my kids' water polo and swim teams, and playing board games. I'm looking forward to another great year at Rancho!

What are we doing in Room 10?

Language Arts: We spent January exploring non-fiction books. Students read books about weather, short bios of famous African Americans, stories about American heroes like Bessie Coleman and Hank Greenberg, the story of Ruby Bridges, biographies of modern-day people, and more. This coming week, students will select their person to focus their biography study and presentation on.

Technology:  Mr. Graham is keeping the kids busy learning the tricks of Microsoft Word. Students can now change font size and color, insert text, and more!

Writing:  Students are experts at picking out important facts from their non-fiction reading!

Library: Library books always due Friday!

Math: We are focusing this week on multiplication of multi-digit numbers by a single digit. We also took a test last week on telling time. Some students are still having difficulty with elapsed time so please practice this when you can - "How much time has passed between 10:15 am and 1 pm?" for example.

PLT:  This continues to be a popular time, our Personal Learning Time. Students are getting quite good at research, note-taking, paragraph writing, and presenting. This week some topics being explored are: chocolate, mummies, Michael Phelps, houseflies, and rainbows. Ask your child what they are working on!

Homework: Your child should be reading nightly and recording their books in a book log. Please sign the log.

PE:. Two coaches visited Rancho courtesy of Ms. BJ and the Washington Stealth professional women's lacrosse team. The students learned lacrosse basics and will have acces to the equipment they donated!

Science: Solar System study has been launched!

Social Studies:  Upcoming: We will be exploring Lincoln and Washington in honor of President's Day!
