Second Step: Social Emotional Learning Workshop
Empathy, Problem Solving and Emotion Management
September 22, 2010 at noon - 1:45 pm or 7:00 - 8:45 pm
In this PTA parent workshop we will be reviewing the Second Step social-emotional learning program and discussing what families and caregivers can do at home to help children understand and practice positive social skills.
Have you heard your child or teacher talk about Second Step? The award-winning SECOND STEP program integrates social and emotional learning with academics. Kids learn and practice vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving, and cooperation. These essential life skills help students in the classroom, on the playground, and at home.
In addition to helping children develop a greater sense of self-worth and greater concern for others, feel more competent in handling daily responsibilities and challenges, and establish more positive and meaningful relationships, research also suggests SEL can improve academic achievement, and reduce the likelihood students will engage in various high-risk behaviors. SEL - especially the ability to set goals, solve problems and communicate effectively- provides a foundation for academic achievement.
